Go Romantic with a Mariachi

Got a special date coming up? Step it a notch and make it even more romantic. Try Mexico. Now you might be thinking Acapulco or Cancun. That’s not a bad idea but if you only have enough time for a fine dinner then try Mariachi. With the enchanting music of this traditional Mexican ensemble, your girlfriend or wife will feel nothing short of special.

Mariachi is native to Mexico and is speculated to have been in existence in the country hundreds of years before the French occupation. Its name is also widely debated as its origin is quite unclear. Some scholars conclude that Mariachi is derived from the French word marriage; a term aptly used as this ensemble was often seen and heard during wedding festivities.

However, other scholars disagree. They argue that the name Mariachi has native origins, predating that of the French invasion. Some conclude that the name was derived from a local tree which was often used to build a stage that the Mariachi performed on. Scholarly studies haven’t really found for certain the origin of Mariachi but one thing is for sure- if you want to hear and feel the soul of Mexico, a Mariachi in their full glory is the closest thing you can get.

A Mariachi band is composed of violins, trumpets, acoustic guitar, and sometimes harp. It’s similar to that of a European ensemble only difference is a vihuela, a high-pitched five string guitar that gives Mariachi that enthralling music. And as you’ve seen on TV, Internet, or print, they are dressed uniformly in a traditional costume called charro and wide-brimmed hats. Now have this Mexican culture on your anniversary date and you’re assured of a goodnight and a satisfied smile from your sweetheart.

If you’re planning on a very special date, ditch the usual concert idea. Don’t buy tickets and use that money for Mariachi. Search for an ensemble in your area and hire them privately. But if budget is tight or private appearances are simply not available, look for Mexican restaurants. There’s a higher chance that they feature Mariachi.

But if you really don’t have the luck but likes the idea of Mexican infusion, you can always buy the CDs. Just pick a good one, have a CD player ready, and play it softly during your dinner. Take note that this must be a private dinner. Your restaurant might not agree with your choice of music. Finally, with this enchanting folk music filling your night, there’s no doubt you’ll have an amazing and most romantic date.
